In 1955 Audemars Piguet introduced the first perpetual calendar wristwatch with a leap year indication, affirming its haute horlogerie credentials with a series of classic models whose iconic design and performance have rendered them amongst the most desired of
In 2017, the watchmaker reaffirms its mastery of timekeeping with the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in black ceramic, a version of the 2016 model that, while following its predecessor closely, also offers something very interesting and new, which is the achievement of its black ceramic case, which has been hand-finished in a brushed matte finish. This required considerable skill on the part of AP’s master craftsmen, with
the virtually unscratchable black ceramic requiring more than 30 hours of machining, polishing, hand-finishing and assemblage. (Just to give you an idea, it takes six hours to put together a stainless steel bracelet of the same model type). It took 600 hours to research to master the brushed matte black case. The result is a high performance wristwatch that looks and acts the part.
The stunning black ceramic case of the Royal Oak.
Inside, it features the self-winding Calibre 5134 movement which is based on a previous Calibre 2120, and has been enlarged to fit the new 41mm dimensions of the case. It’s fully visible through the case back, allowing the wearer to appreciate the exceptional movement that powers the watch. On the dial, AP’s ‘Grande Tapisserie’ pattern in slate grey offers a suitable setting for the black counters in which the astronomical moon, day, date, month, leap years, hours and minutes and that star perpetual calendar with week indication are resplendently displayed.
White gold applied hour markers, black inner bezel and Royal Oak hands with high-performance luminescent coating confirm the watch’s impeccable aesthetic credentials, with the black ceramic bracelet further lending a feeling of power and sporty prestige.
